The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) –Aklan continues on preparing and planting activities to meet the National Greening Program (NGP) target area of 1,414.00 hectares all over the province this year 2016. At the end of July 2016, PENRO-Aklan reported that they already planted 991.00 has. equivalent to 70% of the yearly target.
Covering 2011 to 2015, PENRO-Aklan has planted 6, 346.70 has. of forestland areas with 4.1 million seedlings in 60 barangays within 15 municipalities. This is equivalent to .27% of the National Goal in planting of 1.5 billion seedlings and .42% in 1.5 mil. has. for the five-year period of implementation of NGP.
In this period of the project, PENRO-Aklan prevalent commodities of NGP plantation were timber, indigenous, fuel wood, cacao, coffee, fruit trees, bamboo, mangrove, rubber and urban greening.
According to the report, eleven municipalities with upland areas have planted 6, 184.00 has. with 3, 250, 983 seedlings. The most number of seedlings planted were in Ibajay (796, 500), Malinao (706, 000) and Madalag (648, 200).
PENRO-Aklan has planted 83 has. of mangrove areas with 82, 221 seedlings in municipalities of Batan, Kalibo, Numancia, New Washington, Ibajay, and Malay. Most of the seedlings were planted in Batan (43, 890) within 50.00has.
A total of 4, 000 bamboo seedlings were also planted within 20 has. in the municipalities of Kalibo, Numancia, and Balete. NGP also included urban greening in 11 municipalities with 23, 600 seedlings in 59 has.
Forester Yuri Aborka of PENRO-Aklan said that aside from being a reforestation initiatives and a climate change mitigation strategy, NGP here in Aklan has able to provide alternative livelihood activities for marginalized upland and lowland households relating to seedling production and care and maintenance of newly planted trees. If fruit-bearing trees are planted, the fruits will automatically go to the household or organization responsible for taking care of the plants.
Aborka encourages other people’s organizations to support the national program. He also made it clear that individual planting will not be counted. An individual should join registered organization and to work with other members to do the planting or greening program.
NGP is a massive forest rehabilitation program of the government established by virtue of Executive Order No. 26 issued on Feb. 24, 2011 by Former-President Benigno S. Aquino III. It seeks to grow 1.5 bil. trees in 1.5 mil. has. nationwide within a period of six years, from 2011 to 2016. However, on Nov. 12, 2015, the program has been extended for another 12 years with the goal of reforesting the remaining 7.1 million hectares of denuded forestlands in the country through EO No 193 signed by Aquino.
