“Mamugon”

Aklanon spoken literature includes kaeantahon (folk song) or kumpuso (song composition). According to some elderly, most of this spoken literature is used to serenade woman (locally known as harana), lullaby (hele in vernacular), as luwa being sang in wakes, among others.

“Mamugon” (to harvest, especially rice plants) is one of this folk songs generally unwritten with unknown compositor had been pass on from our forefathers to our times. I have heard and knew this (at least this version) from my grandmother, Patricia Dela Cruz Tapayan, now 83 years old. The song relates the story of a typical farmer harvesting in a rice field with its dramatic story missing his/her died mother.

Mamugon ako mamugon

Sang gantang ro suhoe sa maghapon

Alas dose ako pakan-on

Oras eon nga ako paulion.

Pag-abot sa baeay

Mangayo ako it humay

Tinuro ako ni Tatay

Sa eusong ro paeay.

Alinon ko ro paeay?

Eawas ko hay nagapangabudlay;

Kung buhi eang si Nanay

Makaon ako, mapahuway.
